The 2026 Vugar Gashimov Open began on July 24 and is currently underway at the Baku Olympic Hall. The international chess festival, held in memory of the late Grandmaster Vugar Gashimov, runs until July 30 and features a main classical open section with nearly 200 participants from multiple countries.

This year’s edition holds extra significance as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of Vugar Gashimov’s birth. On July 24, family members, friends, players, and officials visited Gashimov’s grave to pay tribute before the tournament started. Gashimov, who passed away in 2014, remains one of Azerbaijan’s most beloved chess figures known for his creative and attacking style.

Tournament Format and Prize Fund

The main event is a classical Swiss-system tournament. In addition to the open section, the festival includes separate rapid and blitz competitions. The total prize fund for all events is 30,000 AZN (roughly 17,647 USD).

The tournament is organized by the Vugar Gashimov Chess Foundation in cooperation with the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It forms part of the wider Azerbaijani chess tour calendar.
