The inaugural FIDE World University Team Championship has reached its semifinal stage after four days of intense competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Four universities remain in contention for the historic first title after the quarterfinals concluded on August 7.

Quarterfinal Results

The knockout stage delivered several dominant performances and one closely contested battle that kept host nation hopes alive.

Saint Louis University delivered the most emphatic quarterfinal performance, dismantling fellow American institution Harvard University with consecutive 4-0 and 3.5-0.5 victories to comfortably secure their semifinal berth.

Ural State Mining University proved equally convincing against Universidad de Chile, winning 4-0 and 3.5-0.5 to advance without dropping a single game across both matches.

The University of Texas at Dallas overcame Universitas Gunadarma in a tighter contest. After winning the opening match 3-1, Dallas appeared in control, but the Indonesian team pushed hard in the second round. A late mistake from Gunadarma in a winning position turned the match around, allowing Dallas to take the second round 2.5-1.5 and secure the final semifinal place.

The most dramatic quarterfinal featured host nation representatives KNUS (Kazakh National University of Sports) against the National Technical University of Athens. The first match ended 2-2, with victories for Kazakhstan coming from GM Kazybek Nogerbek and IM Meruert Kamalidenova, while IMs Satbek Akhmedinov and Aristan Isanzhulov lost their games. The second match proved decisive, with KNUS winning 3-1 to claim a 5-3 aggregate victory and a place in the semifinals.

Prize Fund and Schedule

The championship carries a total prize fund of €50,000. The winning team will receive €25,000, with €15,000 for second place and €10,000 for third.

Semifinal matches will be contested on August 8, with the final and third-place playoff scheduled for August 9. The tournament features a fast classical time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, with each team consisting of four players and requiring at least one male and one female player in the lineup.
