While the German gained a slight advantage, it never proved decisive, and the game ended in a draw. Sam Sevian and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu played a Ruy Lopez Neo-Arkhangelsk Variation that fizzled into a draw, with both players achieving 99% accuracy. Anish Giri and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave also split the point after a solid contest.

Cairns Cup: Tan, Divya, Lee Lead After Opening Round

The Cairns Cup women’s event produced more decisive action, with three players emerging with full points after round one.

Tan Zhongyi, the highest-rated player in the field, defeated defending champion Carissa Yip in a game that turned dramatically in the endgame. Yip, who won the 2025 Cairns Cup with a half-point margin over Alice Lee, was in time trouble and made a tactical blunder with 35…Qf8??. Tan responded with the winning 36.Qe6+ and Yip resigned immediately.

Divya Deshmukh scored an impressive victory against her compatriot Vaishali Rameshbabu. Playing with black pieces, Divya built pressure on the d-file and eventually broke through as Vaishali ran low on time. In a losing position, Vaishali had no choice but to resign.

Alice Lee, who finished second in the 2025 event, secured a win against Alexandra Kosteniuk. The game appeared headed for a draw in the endgame, but Lee’s connected passed pawns proved too difficult for Kosteniuk to stop. Lee sacrificed her rook to promote a pawn and forced resignation.

All three winners now share the lead on one point each.

Prize Fund and Context

The Sinquefield Cup carries a $475,000 prize fund and is the final event of the Grand Chess Tour before the season-ending Finals, also set to take place in Saint Louis. Players are not only competing for the tournament prize but also for qualification spots to the GCT Finals.

Vachier-Lagrave, who has finished in the top three of the Grand Chess Tour for the last eight years, is at risk of missing the Finals. He admitted he needs to win the Sinquefield Cup to qualify, adding that if Caruana goes into “beast mode,” as round one seemed to suggest, there is only so much one can do.
